Booklist Review
British author Doherty adds to her list of magic-filled early chapter books with this Stepping Stones Fantasy title. Tam has only just gotten used to his new baby sister, Blue, when she is replaced with a changeling: a nasty little gobliny thing whom Tam names Pix. Only Great-Grandfather knows how to set the situation right: Tam must travel to the land of the fairies with Pix and convince the king and queen to give up Blue. Dressed for adventure in his bathrobe and armed with his toy sword and kaleidoscope, Tam bravely embarks on his quest. After traveling through magical lakes and mountains and freeing enchanted fairies, he finally reaches the court and accomplishes his mission. The family's varied reactions to Pix create plenty of droll scenes that young readers will enjoy, and Harker's appealing line drawings, more silly than scary, ably reinforce the plot and will help struggling new readers stay engaged. The special relationship between Tam and Great-Grandfather, who enjoyed his own youthful rambles through the fairy kingdom, deepens this light offering.--Engberg, Gillian Copyright 2009 Booklist
